Recent reports on Sky Sports News and other Football news outlets have suggested Manchester United are closing in on a bid to sign Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri. Since the window has been open they, along with Manchester City have been linked with Shakhtar’s Frederico Rodrigues Santos AKA Fred. A similar player in a lot of ways to Seri but I feel Seri would be the best option for Man United.
I think he would complement Matic and Pogba nicely in that United Midfield. He plays in the Defensive Midfield position for Nice but at United, I feel he could play in a Carrilero – or ‘Shuttler’ role. This is basically a link between the defensive areas to the attacking areas of the oppositions half. It’s a position made famous by Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante. It requires a player to have bundles of stamina and a lot of strength which Seri has.
Now Seri doesn’t have the best tackling stats compared to the likes of Fred but what sets him apart is his ability to anticipate what the opposition does next. It this along with his agility that allows him to win the ball in defensive areas and launch an attack in the same breath.
He posses great technical ability, has a good passing range and vision to sail a defense-splitting ball which I’m sure the likes of Lukaku and the new arrival Sanchez would love to run on to. He does love a back heel those which looks great if it comes off but embarrassing if it doesn’t.
Now Seri was on his way to Barcelona during the Summer transfer window having agreed terms on a £35 million deal, only for Barca to pull out last minute. No reason as to why this happened but I don’t think Barcelona had found anything wrong with the player I think they were saving their money for Liverpool’s Coutinho who ended up moving there this January window.
A lot of teams have been circling for Seri ever since. The likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, and Liverpool have all peaked their interest. But I feel United would be the best move for him. Michael Carrick is retiring at the end of the season and Marouane Fellaini not exactly set Old Trafford on fire and is likely to leave in the summer anyway, Man United would have a big hole to fill alongside Matic and Pogba.
Even if he does not arrive at Old Trafford until next season he would certainly give United a different dynamic in Midfield. They should take Liverpool as an example and do what they did with Naby Keita, who does not arrive at Anfield until next season.
Seri will likely cost upwards of £35 million, but in today’s market, that is a bargain of a player. Let us know what you think in the comments below. A good signing for United? Would Fred be a better option or someone else? As you can see from the image below (ignore the teams they play for, thats me playing FM) Seri edges it.
